The day was marked by stop-start play due to rain, which initially delayed the start of the second session and then forced an early Tea. Despite these interruptions, India's No. 10 and 11 batsmen, Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Kumar Reddy, seemed to have shut the door on Australia after play resumed. However, Pat Cummins brought himself on and dismissed Reddy, leaving Jadeja to continue with Mohammed Siraj.
Jadeja's signature sword celebration made its debut in this year's Border-Gavaskar Trophy, symbolizing his crucial role in powering India's lower-order push. The all-rounder's performance has been a highlight of the tour, especially in his first innings of the series.
For Australia, dismissing one of the two remaining Indian batsmen early on Day 4 could open up significant possibilities. KL Rahul has looked stable at the crease despite being struck early by Hazlewood, while Rohit Sharma has been vulnerable against high pace in recent months. This weakness could be exploited by Australia as they aim to secure a win or at least gain an upper hand.
India, however, remains hopeful. If Rohit can find his form, he and Rahul can score runs, leveraging their experience in partnering each other in testing conditions. The threat of rain also looms over Day 4, which could further complicate Australia's plans. Given their horror display in the first half of this Test match, India will be more than happy to settle for a draw and go back to the drawing board ahead of the Boxing Day Test at the MCG.
